The Problem with Chemicals

There are currently over 80,000 chemicals on the market in the U.S., the vast majority of which have not been tested for their effect on human health and the environment. A number of these chemicals have known links to cancer, birth defects, reproductive impacts, and other health problems. Most are currently not regulated and continue to accumulate in our bodies and the environment.

A Solution
We need a chemical policy that puts the public's health and safety above the profits of the chemical industry. Currently, it is only after harm is shown that a chemical can be regulated or withdrawn from the market.  Our toxics policy needs to be changed so the chemical industry is  required to demonstrate the safety of a chemical before people are exposed to it. Instead, the US government is actively working against Europe’s attempts to implement such a policy.
